Baby wearing is also known as ‘attachment parenting’. And, in the advanced countries, it gained popularity, partly under influence of advocates of attachment parenting.
There are several benefits of baby wearing both for the baby as well as the wearer. It is believed that the natural way of carrying babies are by holding them in petal posture. By this way, the infant is practically attached to the body of the mother. And, in this position the baby is all the more happy and so are mothers, who can read every need of the baby by judging its movements.
Once attached the body of the parent, the infants are calmer because all of their primary survival needs are duly met and they are more organized. Parental rhythms through their walking, heartbeat, etc. have balancing and soothing effects on infants
Baby wearing allows the wearer to have two free hands to attend other works while caring for the baby. The close physical contact generally leads to more intimate maternal bond, easier breastfeeding and better care, thus lowering the incidence of postpartum depression and psychosomatic illness.
Attachment between child and parents is more secure and further decreases risk of positional plagiocephaly or the flat head syndrome caused by extended time of sleeping on the back. The important thing is that none of the baby wearing positions requires infants to lie supine while being carried. Infants can even be worn while they sleep, also decreasing sleeping time spent in a supine position.
While traveling in a car, baby wearing offers a safer alternative to placing a car seat on top of a shopping cart. It also allows exposure of children to the world around. Sling carriers have particular advantage as the users find them easier on the back and shoulders than carrying their infant in a car seat. The weight of the child is spread more evenly across the upper body of the wearer.
Different models of baby wearings are available in the market today. They come in many different designs and colors and made of different types of materials, including silk, hemp, cotton, wool, fleece, and flax/linen.
