Wrap Baby Carriers- The Basic Things

Wrap Baby Carriers are also known as "wraparounds" or "wraparound slings" and usually measures between two to seven meters in length and 15-30 inches in width.
Wraparound slings are wrapped around both the baby and the wearer and then tied. Depending upon the length of the fabric, the user can set different carrying positions for the baby with a wrap.
With shorter wraps it is possible to do a one-shouldered carry, similar to those done with a pouch or a ring sling. However, most carriers involve the fabric going over both shoulders of the wearer and also around the waist to offer maximum support to the child. A child or a toddler can be carried on the wearer's front, back or hip.
There are two main types of wrap, namely stretchy and woven. Stretchy wraps are generally made of knits such as jersey or interlock. Polyester fleece and wool jersey are sometimes used for carrying babies in cool weather. It is easy to 'pop' babies in and out of a stretchy wrap. This can be easier for the wearer as the sling often remains tied on and the baby is lifted out and put back in as required.
Stretchy wraps are popular for carrying young babies, but as the baby grows, the stretch can become uncomfortable for the wearer. Also different brands and fabrics vary radically in the amount of stretch.
In general, as the stretch is set lengthwise, the strength of the carrier becomes less stronger to hold the baby, particularly heavier babies. It is observed that carriers with any spandex or lycra content will tend to be very stretchy. Whereas, carriers which are 100% cotton or other natural fibers will tend to have less lengthwise stretch. For this reason, natural fibers like cotton are are usually chosen by people. Hemp, linen, silk and wool are other choices.
There are woven wraps made of woven fabric of varying thickness and are available in a wide choice of colors, patterns and materials.
Meanwhile, simple pieces of cloth can be turned into slings by wrapping the fabric around the wearer and baby. This can be done either tying it with knots or using a twist and tuck method to secure the ends.
The fabric used for wrap baby carriers are woven to set a diagonal stretch by most weaves to lessen the lengthwise stretch. This allows the fabric to better conform to the baby and to the wearer's body. On the other hand, thinner fabrics may cause pressure points for the wearer when used for long periods of time. They are also unaccustomed to faulty wrapping techniques.
